The quick repetition and
rat a tat tat
is loud and breaks the night air.
There is no lingering smoke from rocket launched
so a call to the authorities it is.

I never liked that game.
I would always be pushed off.
Other kids can be mean.
Though watching the pigeons
I smile at their version as they gather round the feeding station.
One puffs up his feathers
Warning and shooing a few away
As others sneak up behind him.
Eventually the ravens come
And the previous owner of the rock has flown away.
Upon opening eyes the world is grey.
Looking up at the sky sees clouds.
Though in the clearer section of the skies
Sunshine peeks through timidly.
Will it rain all day,
intermittently
or will the clouds be chased away
and the full strength of the sun
be allowed to come blazing down?
I reap the benefits
even though I did nothing wrong.
Those previous made the mistakes
and I enjoy the rewards.
All too soon though
what happened in the past
is revealed to all who care to see
and the simple pleasure I received
no longer gives me joy.
Rewards are there to be just that –
rewards!
We strive and slog through the hard
and unpleasant things
in order to get to the good stuff.
It is the carrot on a stick
that someday we will get
unlike the unlucky donkey.
Now if only I could convince my cat
that she has to wait for her playtime.
The tiredness undermines my determination
yet when another surprise comes
I lash out angrily.
How can I stop being so irritated?
Other than getting more sleep,
of course.
Nothing goes right.
Luck has run out.
Exhausted and alone.
Feeling empty as air.
Remember air is not empty.
It is filled with different molecules
and so are you.
Take that break, rest and relax.
Then tackle the problems once again.
You can do this.
We all know you can.
Because guess what?
The world is not against you.
The problem ahead of you is!
Do not look right!
Should not be acting like that.
What’s that smell?
Ok,
where’s the nearest bathroom!
I might be awhile…
Not the wake up call I would have preferred.
The purring warmth of stifling fur.
Lack of mobility caused by non awakeness
means she sits there until breath runs out.
Upon full awareness
the irony of the situation
is not lost on me
as I blink blearily at the one
who wants to play.
Too bad I have an appointment
that I would have missed
if she had not tried to suffocate me.
The news flash across the screen
another shooting/riot/murder.
Look at social media and people are
complaining/yelling/angry.
Turn off the electronics and watch
the birds/children play/neighbours talking.
What am I waiting for?
The bread to rise/the cake to bake/the meat to thaw?
The answer will come.
Someday.
Just not today.
