To be the winner
Means first place
Or having outlasted
Everyone else.
But what if you get lonely?
If you realize that being a winner
Does not equate to being on top
But merely enjoying
The journey that you travel,
Then you will believe in yourself
And know the true value of others.
They are not your enemy
But
They are not always your friend.
Know the difference
And
Your life will be longer
Laughing.
When you both share the same interests
When you are open to new experiences
When you watch the same thing
And have the same reaction
Your bodies curled up beside each other
Drained and contented
After the passions just shared
It is a very good feeling!
The confident ones seem to be alive
eager and more than capable
of establishing themselves
in the world that they have chosen.
The rest of us,
we simply exist
and envy
the confident ones.
Yet often will revel
in any faults or dirty laundry
that may come to light.
Because it makes them more human
There is an old 20 questions riddle
that when I was younger I did not understand.
Now as an older, more jaded person
I can understand the true horror of that fate.
Why would he kill himself?
Suicide is no laughing matter.
And 20 questions or not
the answer to his fate is horrible.
All the facts point to scenarios where
what must be done were done.
I feel bad for him in that he was lied to.
When things are overdue
A chance to reflect is past
Impulses need to be curbed
or the status will be meaningless
Friends will understand
or they are no true friend
and life moves on
after the breakup tears fall less
Send out your courageous thoughts
As you wander the path now chosen
Soon the forks become clearer
Both have a use
some like lemonade
but only if you have sweetened it.
Lemons are useful
for a multitude of things.
From cleaning, cooking
and even writing.
Am I the only one
who remembers using lemon juice
as invisible ink
to pass secret notes to friends?
When an old friend
is not the same as what you remember
you see how they have changed.
It is also a chance to see yourself
as someone who has grown
or slid back into old habits.
Do you fall back into the habits
when you last hung out together?
Or do you gently remind yourself
that they are a friend
and the purpose to follow bad impulses.
Even if they used to be fun.
The sugar infused
highly charged
ready to explode
child of the previous nights
All Hallow’s Eve.
Thankfully I have
the other parental unit
to hand them off to.
I wave good-bye
and silently watch
the drama enfold
snickering knowing my weekend
will be sugar free.
My stomach is queasy.
Or should I say heartburn
since it is my esophagus that hurts
causing sleep to be interrupted.
And so here I sit
hoping for it to calm down
so that sleep
is still an option
before the morning routine
needs to commence in
oh,
3 or so hours.
The bane of parents
every year
at this time of fall
as the children
take lunches
to school
and they come home
uneaten
because of the treats
and goodies
that are
EVERYWHERE!
So give in
and don’t send any lunch
because
they won’t eat it
until all the candy is gone!
Gone!
I say gone!
Begone?
This year
parent tax
may not go over so well
in the candy department.
